ABOUT THE PROJECT
Oria is an online learning platform designed for adult professionals seeking to develop new skills, earn certifications, and advance their careers through structured, self-paced education. Unlike traditional academic platforms, Oria positions itself around flexibility, practical application, and a learning experience that respects the time constraints and motivational challenges of working adults balancing education alongside full professional and personal lives.
The redesign project covered the complete learner experience — from onboarding and course discovery through to lesson delivery, progress tracking, assessment, and certification — with the goal of creating a product that felt genuinely motivating and personally relevant rather than generic and obligatory.
THE CHALLENGE
Keeping adult learners engaged when life constantly competes for their attention
Adult learners are the most at-risk demographic for course abandonment in online education. Unlike full-time students, they are navigating competing demands on their time and attention at every moment, and the intrinsic motivation required to return to a learning platform after a long workday is significant. The existing Oria platform had strong content but a learning experience that felt passive, impersonal, and difficult to fit into fragmented schedules — leading to high enrollment numbers but poor completion rates across almost every course category.
Key challenges included:
Designing a learning experience that respected fragmented time availability
Creating meaningful progress visualization that sustained motivation
Personalizing course discovery without requiring extensive setup
Making assessment and feedback feel supportive rather than evaluative
Building a mobile experience capable of supporting full lesson completion
OUR APPROACH
Designing for motivation as much as for usability
The design strategy was informed by research into adult learning psychology and motivation — specifically the role of autonomy, competence, and progress visibility in sustaining engagement over time. The interface was redesigned to make every session feel productive regardless of its length, with micro-learning formats, clear session time estimates, and persistent progress indicators that made even five minutes of learning feel meaningful and complete.
VISUAL DIRECTION
The Oria visual system was built to feel warm, focused, and distinctly different from both the sterile aesthetic of corporate training tools and the gamified visual chaos of consumer learning apps. A palette of deep forest green, warm cream, and soft amber creates an environment that feels calm and intellectually serious without being cold or intimidating. The lesson delivery interface was stripped back to pure focus — removing all non-essential navigation and notification elements during active learning to create an environment free from digital distraction.
Progress visualization was given particular design attention — a custom progress architecture communicates achievement at three levels simultaneously: within a lesson, within a course module, and across the learner's overall skill development journey. This layered progress visibility creates frequent moments of completion and accomplishment that sustain motivation across what can otherwise feel like an overwhelmingly long learning path.

DESIGN SYSTEM
A comprehensive product design system was built to support the full learning platform across all content types, assessment formats, and device contexts.
Core elements included:
Focus mode layout system for distraction-free lesson delivery
Multi-level progress component architecture
Assessment and feedback component library
Course card and discovery interface components
Responsive system supporting full lesson completion on mobile
FINAL SOLUTION
A learning platform designed around the reality of adult life
The redesigned Oria platform achieved a substantial improvement in course completion rates following launch — a metric that had remained stubbornly low despite previous attempts to address it through content strategy alone. By treating motivation and time respect as core design problems rather than content problems, the product transformed the learning experience from something users felt they should do into something they genuinely wanted to return to — establishing Oria as a platform that earns its place in the limited and precious discretionary time of the professionals it serves.
